This summer former Chelsea and England midfielder Karen Carney, who retired after assisting the Lionesses reach the World Cup semi-finals, will soon write columns to the BBC Sport site, working on Radio 5 Live and comprising this season.
I gave to the sport and today I just want some time for me.
When you come out of skilled sport, it is worrying. It and all you’ve ever achieved. You’ve got to get used to being calmed by individuals and not moving into the training floor each and every minute of every day. It is rather daunting.
But I’m enjoying the space and in the next few decades I’d like to set up my own business . I’ve a masters in psychology and a diploma in sports science. I want to link into the business world. I’m enjoying the media function but I want to venture outside and do something of my own.
I honestly think I am over it although I might have been really busy I have not had time to reflect in my retirement. Once I have been out jogging there have been a few times this week and it has hit me. I miss the game, the games that are big. I thought’I haven’t achieved what I wanted to attain’ but I got my knees hurt – ! I didn’t have the motivation to keep going more.
I’m excited by other challenges. There’s a great deal more to existence – it was among the greatest jobs on earth and I was privileged to be able to get it done – but there is much more to me as being a footballer.
I hurried home to watch the conclusion of England’s friendly against Belgium and I was surprised by emotional and how excited I was while watching it. I want them to do nicely, and I will. It is a cycle so I am interested to see how they get on, and they have made some changes. At no point did I think’I performed this and might have come on there’. I was just watching as a fan.
Even the Women’s Champions League begins again this week and since they have won it Lyon need to be favourites.
Since they’ve won it , will be complacency. I believe they are too good and they could allow it to slip although it’s hard to obtain the additional motivation. The manager will take them to a different level also.
It a mentality thing. Last season at Chelsea, had we thought we could do it, matters could have been quite different. We just started to believe following the first leg of our defeat by Lyon and that was too late. We challenged them we got .
It is up to the groups around Europe to begin thinking it today. It’s whether they took note and thought’as everybody believes, actually, Lyon aren’t as invincible’. There are weaknesses – each group has them.
But Lyon are great why they’re ranked number one, so that is that they will always have an answer. It’s theirs to lose as usual but there might be a few surprises which may push them.
Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro has them working hard and they have a squad that was excellent. They could cause some upsets, if their run from the Champions League is good. They have invested so much money in their team.
There are three kinds of footballers – an worldwide player, a Champions League participant along with a team player. They all have different characteristics and various styles. Arsenal have gone for a lot of European players which will suit them in the Champions League. As they are the types of players who can win Champions League games you will want these ball carriers and also set-piece specialists at moments.
They have a couple Dutch gamers who have enjoyed success on the worldwide stage. They contacted the World Cup final and won the Euros. It’s no fluke. Those players know what it requires. Having knowledge and that experience is crucial. They will probably be big-game players and won’t be afraid of moments that are large.
Manchester City are always great too. I watched their game against Atletico Madrid they had been organised, ordered, bodily and really fit.
Obviously Ellen White while she’s injured but once she comes back which will provide them a second impetus will be missed by them. They are regimented and are hard to beat, hard to crack down. They might look to use soccer. Their experience will do them nicely although I think that they are a couple of players .
In terms of Barcelona, they have been heavily defeated in last year and they have been probably a bit naive. There’s a significant gap between them and the very best. Their style does not match the Champions League just yet as it’s quite slow. I think go up the next level and they have to improve their intensity. They will have to counter-attack fast and have more speed. So if they can add the intensity they are on to something, they can keep the ball for pleasure.
Champions League football is a competition for virtually any team. It requires a very long time to build a team that has quality, experience and a design that may win that title to you.
