After holding off the exhilarating fightback in one of the US Open finals of Russian Daniil Medvedev rafael Nadal won his Grand Slam title.
Spain’s Nadal, 33, won 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4 against the fifth seed at New York.
Nadal cruised in two sets and a split up, only for Medvedev to force a decider.
However, Nadal stopped his momentum to finally clinch a success in just four weeks and 51 minutes.
Nadal’s victory moves him within one of rival Roger Federer’s tally of Grand Slam successes.
“It has been among the most emotional nights in my tennis career,” Nadal said. “It’s been an remarkable final. It’s been a crazy match.”
Nadal fell to the court covering his face as considered another victory that epitomised his fighting spirit all, after taking his third game point.
Medvedev, 23, trudged around the net to congratulate his rival, who appeared on the verge of tears while taking rapturous acclaim because he coated his face with his vest.
“I only want to congratulate Rafa, a 19th Grand Slam title is something unbelievable, outrageous,” Medvedev said.
Those fortunate enough to be watching one of a near 24,000 capacity crowd were frequently left open-mouthed in what they witnessed, together with the majority helping create an atmosphere on a noisy Arthur Ashe Stadium and celebrating wildly after every point, jumping with their feet.
Because he threatened to finish an extraordinary comeback medvedev had been booed by the audience earlier in the championship, yet heard his name loudly chanted by many.
Finally it was too late as he was not able to become the world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia and the first person outside Nadal, Federer to assert among the biggest prizes of the sport since the victory of Stan Wawrinka within 2016.
Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have won the Previous 12 Grand Slams after the Spaniard raised the trophy at New York to get a fourth time.
Now Nadal has the opportunity to draw level with Federer, who was nine titles much better off than his competition in 2007.
